10 reasons why women should lift

OK, maybe I should have called this blog post 10 reasons why YOU should lift but I chose to add the women part as through my own experience, gents do not normally need much persuading to enter the free weights area of a gym. Ladies generally need a little more persuading as an image of a bodybuilder tends to spring to mind when it's mentioned.

So, here are 10 reasons why women (and men) SHOULD lift...

Lifting weights increases EPOC

Excess post-exercise oxygen consumption or the 'afterburn' effect is the amount of calories your body will burn in an effort to return to its normal state. Push yourself with weights further away from normality (your comfort zone) and the more calories you'll burn as your body brings you back to this zone after lifting.

Your metabolic rate will increase

Your metabolic rate is how many calories your body will burn when not training. The higher your metabolic rate, the more calories you'll burn whilst sat on the sofa, lying in bed sleeping or dancing in the shower (actually that one counts as physical activity so scrap that one!). How do you actually up your metabolic rate? Increase your muscle mass!

Decreased risk of injury and illness

Not only will your muscles get stronger, your tendons will too. That's great Dan but I'm only interested in getting into that outfit for summer so I'll just run for the next 3 months... You won't be running for very long if your tendons aren't strong enough to support your joints!

Stronger bones

Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones. Lifting weights has been proven to reduce the risk of this, not increase it!

Loads more variety

Let's say you walk into a gym. It has a reclined bike (you know the ones, the kind that you see people sat on reading the newspaper) on one side of the room and on the other a bar with a few plates on the floor. With the bar you can...

Back squat

Front Squat

Squat & press

Military press

Bicep curl

Deadlift

Romanian deadlift

Bench press

That's a handful of exercises, you could do a hell of a lot more!

With a bike you can...

Cycle. Yawn.

Enough said on that one.

Boost stamina and energy levels

With greater strength comes great levels of energy! You'll feel nowhere near as tired!

Anti-aging

We all know that as we start aging things start to shrink and sag. Good news is, if you lift weights you'll retain your strength and muscle mass keeping your shape looking youthful for longer.

Grow your self confidence

I've been training clients for 9 years now, never has a client left the gym feeling less confident.

Increased muscle mass = Increased FAT MASS

Pretty straight forward this one. If you carry more lean muscle mass you'll burn more fat mass. It's as simple as that!

Last of all, reason number 10 to train with weights... IT'S BLOODY GOOD FUN! Most ladies and gents that I have trained over the last 9 years have taken what they've learnt with me to train independently because they have thoroughly enjoyed it and wouldn't dream of going back to the monotony of the treadmill.
